446-saturn-from-mimas-dixon–The massive globe of Saturn fills the sky above the desolate, impact-scarred surface of its moon Mimas. Detailed rock textures and deep shadows emphasize the airless environment of the moon's cratered terrain, while the gas giant's rings cut a sharp diagonal across the frame. Two smaller moons are visible as tiny specks near the ring plane, highlighting the immense scale of the Saturnian system. Commisioned by Griffith Observatory for an exhibit.
