448-neptune-from-triton-dixon –This detailed visualization looks across the rugged, icy cantaloupe terrain of Neptune's largest moon, Triton. In the middle ground, a powerful cryovolcanic geyser erupts, lofting dark nitrogen gas and dust high into the thin atmosphere where it begins to drift horizontally. Hanging in the starry sky above the fractured horizon is the gas giant Neptune, showing its banded blue atmosphere, Great Dark Spot, faint high-altitude clouds, and subtle ring system.Commisioned by Griffith Observatory for an exhibit.
