Scientific American covers by Don Dixon / Mercury , November 1997

Probably the high point of my career as an illustrator was when Ed Bell, Scientific American's art director, asked me to do a cover for the magazine in the fall of 1997. I eventually learned that Ed's motto was "first get it right, then make it beautiful." I've always regarded the magazine as the most demanding and prestigious market for a scientific illustrator, and was at once thrilled and terrified by the assignment. This painting of Mercury's Caloris Basin was created using acrylics and gouache on illustration board.
